by Tillie Walden
Originally published in 2017 in the US and now republished in the UK, this graphic memoir follows Tillie throughout her teens as she moves from New Jersey to Texas, continues her intense figure skating training regimen and tries to figure out who she is.
The minimalist illustration style and the gorgeous use of moody shades of purple and yellow perfectly reflect Tillie’s confusion and isolation as she navigates competitions, school, parents and her first crushes on girls, both as a teen and through childhood flashbacks.
A moving story of becoming yourself, this is a perfect pick for fans of Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper comics and shop favourite Thieves by Lucie Bryon. For adults, it would also pair well with other narratives (both fiction and non fiction) about (young) women in competitive sports – including other shop favourites Headshot, Kick the Latch and On Trampolining.
