The Comet

by Joe Todd-Stanton

Paperback £7.99

A child and their dad have to make the difficult move from the seaside to the big city when the father looks for a new job.

This is a gorgeously-illustrated, bittersweet picture book in dreamy colours about the meaning of home, but also about the power of the imagination and the benefits of creativity, the joys of nature and community, and the importance of staying true to yourself.

Picture books about moving are not that easy to find and this one is a good reference to keep in mind to help with a move or a change (for kids and bigger kids!). It shows a child’s capacity to adapt. It reminds us there is good to be found everywhere and it is possible to make a home in a new place even when that place is a lonely city that looks unfamiliar and uninviting at first.

It’s also a good example of a single-dad household, with a message about the importance of empathy and communication, how bonding can come from doing simple daily tasks together, and how family can be just two people.

Also there’s a good cat.
